Grad School Applications

Once you’ve done the soul searching and decided a graduate degree is in your future, compiling the application pieces are the next speed bump to hurdle. Whether you seek an MA, MS, MFA, or PhD, most academic-orientated graduate programs will involve many of the same application pieces. You will be required to submit a neatly packaged bundle that includes most or all of the following items:

  • A personal essay
  • An academic writing sample
  • GRE score
  • Subject GRE score
  • Letters of recommendation (from 3-5, mainly from faculty)
  • Portfolio of creative work
  • Official transcripts from all universities attended
  • Completed online or hard copy of requested personal data

Gathering these many pieces and assuring you present yourself as a strong candidate is no minor task. Each of these application pieces can require many hours of work; taking a GRE prep class, writing your personal goals statement, and building relationships with three or more faculty so they are able to recommend you, are all activities that require careful planning and time management.
